At each Annual Gathering, we hold our Sunderland P. Gardner Lecture. In 2026, it will be on Monday July 20 at 4pm Pacific, 5 pm Mountain, 6 pm Central, 7 pm Eastern, 8 pm Atlantic, 8:30 pm N&L.
Beloved Winnipeg Monthly Meeting Friend, cultural worker, penal abolitionist, community activist, educator and weaver John Samson Fellows delivers the keynote Sunderland P. Gardner Lecture.
As John concludes two terms of service with the Transformative Justice Committee of the Canadian Friends Service Committee, he invites us into a deeper practice of recognizing and answering that of Spirit in ourselves and in one another. With something as ordinary as folding a paper cup, John highlights how the smallest gestures can be acts of attention, relationship, and transformation.
Sunderland P Gardner (1802 – 1893) was a Quaker known for his tireless travel in the ministry among Friends. Year in and year out, Gardner, a farmer of modest means, crossed and re-crossed Genesee Yearly Meeting —the Meeting that knit together northern New York State Quakers and most of the Ontario Quaker meetings. He is said to have spoken with plainness and vigour, love and compassion. He travelled to be present with Friends, particularly in their times of bereavement and sorrow, and Friends embraced him.
