What personal data we collect & why we collect it

Contact forms

Data collected from contact forms will be kept unless a request to delete that information is received from the person who submitted it.

Cookies

This site uses cookies – small text files that are placed on your device to help the site provide a better user experience.

Generally speaking, cookies are used to retain user preferences, store information for things like shopping carts, and provide anonymised tracking data to third party applications like Google Analytics. As a rule, cookies will make your browsing experience better. However, you may prefer to disable cookies on this site and on others. The most effective way to do this is to disable cookies in your browser. This can be done from the Preferences section of your browser. You might also consult your browser’s Help section, or taking a look at the Ultimate Guide to Cookies website, which offers accessible and more detailed explanations.

More specifically when it comes to this site, if you have or create an account for the business side of our site and you log in, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Social Media

If you share our content through social media, for example by liking us on Facebook or following or tweeting about us on Twitter, those social networks will record that you have done so and may set a cookie for this purpose.

In some cases, where a page on our website includes content from a social network, such as a Twitter feed, or Facebook comments box, those services may set a cookie even where you do not click a button.  As is the case for all cookies, we cannot access those set by social networks, just as those social networks cannot access cookies we set ourselves.

Log Files

Our systems automatically gather some anonymous information about visitors, including IP addresses, browser type, language, and the times and dates of webpage visits.  The data collected does not include personally identifiable information and is used, as described above, for statistical analysis, to understand user behaviour, and to administer the site.

Generally speaking, we only look at such information in aggregate – to see how many users are accessing our site from Canada, for example. Specific exceptions usually come at user requests – if our site security system has banned your IP address, for example, we would look at it to help you log into the site.

Google Analytics

Our website uses Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google, Inc. The information generated by the cookie about your use of our website (including your IP address) will be transmitted to and stored by Google on servers in the United States. Google will use this information for the purpose of evaluating your use of our website, compiling reports on website activity for website operators and providing other services relating to website activity and internet usage. Google may also transfer this information to third parties where required to do so by law, or where such third parties process the information on Google’s behalf. Google will not associate your IP address with any other data held by Google.  Further information about Google’s privacy policy may be obtained from www.google.com/privacy.html.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Most devices have an option to turn off location data. If you’re not sure how to remove location data from your digital images, a websearch should help you find the most up to date and relevant guides.

Who we share your data with

We do not share your data with any third parties other than those described on this page.

How long we retain your data

For users that register on our website (if any), we store the personal information they provide in their user profile indefinitely. Website administrators can also see and edit that information. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time. The only thing they cannot change is their username.

To request that your account be deleted, email .

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

For these requests, email .

A Note on Defending Yourself

There are options to protect your privacy in the preferences section of your browser. There are also various apps or browser extensions that can limit some of the tracking described above, like Facebook Container or the Electronic Frontier Foundation’ Privacy Badger. These options are almost constantly changing, so any specific recommendations we make may quickly go out of date, or might not apply to you and your device.

That said, the Electronic Frontier Foundation has been advocating for internet privacy and freedom for over 30 years, and usually has user-friendly and up to date guides and recommendations, as well as news and opportunities for advocacy and collective action. Open Media Canada does similar work in a Canadian context.
