FUM Youth Program

Friends’ United Meeting’s North American Ministries Committee announces a new Young Adult Friends leadership development program in conjunction with the upcoming FUM Triennial, June 9-15, 2014. The FUM Stewards Program intends to provide a mentoring and service program for selected young adults between the ages of 18 to 27. Deadline to apply April 18.

Education and Outreach Committee (E&O) of Canadian Yearly Meeting invites applications from qualified persons who are active members or attenders of a meeting in Canada to facilitate visitation among Canadian Friends. This is a part-time contract position of 20 hours per month from 1 April to 31 December, 2014. E&O seeks applicants who are familiar with the Canadian Quaker community, highly organized, good communicators, and self-starters. Applicants must be able to work independently to achieve the goals of the Visitation Program which is underway and described in the newsletter. This position may involve some travel within Canada, but would be largely carried out by phone and online at the contractor’s premises. Contractor fees will be negotiated with E&O committee and based on training, experience, and CYM contract policies. The work is as follows:

  1. Continue the visitation program begun by the Quaker Education Program Co-ordinator.
  2. Maintain and augment, as appropriate, the list which has been compiled of potential visitors in CYM describing their gifts and ministry.
  3. Talk to meetings within CYM about how things are going and what a visitor could bring to a meeting.
  4. Make connections between meetings.
  5. Contact monthly meeting clerks to promote visitation programming.
  6. Assist with arranging visits. This may include arranging finances, travel arrangements, finding a travel companion, etc.
  7. Decide, in consultation with the E&O Visitation subcommittee, how to allot funding assistance for visitors which has been budgetted by E&O at $2000 per annum per region (east, west, central).
  8. Follow up the visits by communicating with the visitors and the visited for the purpose of improving the program and encouraging and compiling documentation in the form of reports, articles, blogs etc., some of which may be more widely shared with Canadian Friends.
  9. Maintain regular conversation with visitors.
  10. Report, blog, write articles about the visitation program.
  11. Get people to talk about their experiences of visitation.
  12. Consult via email, telephone, or skype as necessary with the Education and Outreach Visitation Program Sub-committee as the work proceeds and make regular reports to this sub-committee.
  13. Keep detailed records of contacts made in performing this work so that the Education and Outreach Committee and future contractors or employees can follow up the work.

CYM is looking for a Web Editor

The Web Editor is responsible for content and images on the website. S/he will plan, research, write copy, solicit material, and edit the content of the ‘open’ portion of S/he will work with other contractors and volunteers to assist committees using and configuring the BUSINESS (‘closed’) side of the website.

For greater specificity, the Web Editor will:
Produce new content as requested by Publications and Communications (P&C) committee acting with other bodies of CYM.
Ensure submitted copy has been approved by the relevant party, is correct and of a professional and consistent style.
Respond to enquiries sent to in a timely fashion
Source and post images and writing of interest to Canadian Quakers, from events, meetings and other places.
Liaise with the editor of The Canadian Friend to publish selected articles for reading on-screen in e-Pub or other e-reader-friendly formats.
Assist in production of an occasional newsletter.
Follow the guidelines in CYM Website Policy, Website Useage, and Draft Communications Plan (available on

Excellent communication skills, in e-mail, written materials, and by telephone.
Ability to communicate clearly with people across a broad range of ages/experience.
Familiarity with editing, grammar, style and proofreading.
Ability to prioritize tasks.
Awareness of, and care for, public perception of the client (CYM).

Demonstrated experience writing and editing in a professional context.
Experience with the conventions required of web copy and best practices.
Experience editing and modifying WordPress pages, sites and online content management generally.
Experience moving text among programs/conversion of images among formats; e.g. InDesign., and with digital photos, resizing and adjusting as required.
College or university diploma/degree in a relevant field, or comparable work experience.
French language skills are an asset. Familiarity with Canadian Quakers is a significant advantage, but not a requirement.

This contract is currently considered to require 10 hours per week; the time may not be evenly distributed over a regular work-week.

This contract is offered for an initial period of 7 months, from June 1, 2014, to December 31, 2014, followed by a one-year contract during 2015 if performance has been satisfactory. The hourly rate proposed may range from $28 per hour to $33 per hour, commensurate with experience. The rate includes allowance for vacation days, sick days and statutory holidays in accordance with CYM Personnel Policy, and a 5% RSP contribution that the contractor is responsible for managing him/herself. The contractor is responsible for paying taxes, CPP, EI, and other statutory deductions.
